Millwall's New Den could be saved as Lewisham councillors want to overturn decision to grant Compuls

MILLWALL'S ground could be saved as local councillors in South East London finally backed the club's bid to stay in Bermondsey.

The Lions have been threatened by a Compulsory Purchase Order, but Lewisham councillors have called for the plans to be "completely revisited".

The club have claimed they may be forced to relocate as far as Kent if the plans are approved and the land around their ground is stripped from them.

Offshore registered firm Renewal plans to build housing on the site, but there are concerns they will not construct affordable accommodation.

The decision by councillors comes after allegations emerged last week that Surrey Canal Sports Foundation - who are involved in the CPO process and are said to have ties to Renewal - had made false claims about a £2million funding pledge from Sport England.

Damien Egan, a Labour councillor, said: "I am increasingly less confident in this scheme since the first round of voting last year.

"My personal preference is that we should completely revisit the planning application that was made by Renewal in 2011 and go back to the drawing board.

"The councillors who agreed this original scheme did so back in 2001. They made a decision based on a very different economic backdrop.

"If a scheme were submitted today it would likely include much more affordable housing."

An independent review of the CPO plans is to take place, Lewisham chief executive Barry Quirk has confirmed.
